the girl in the green dress

The girl in the green dress carries around a large trunk
Filled with small tokens of every person she’s ever hurt
Or thinks she’s hurt
Or wonders if she’s hurt
Or has made up that she’s hurt

She feels that everyone is looking at her
And they must not be nice looks
She knows that inside their heads they are glaring at her
And inside their cheeks, their cheeks are red with disdain
They are just sneaky

The girl in the green dress does not like people much
Only shy people
People who look down instead of glaring at her underneath their eyes

The girl in the green dress rides the subway to work
She enjoys the greasy screech

The girl in the green dress grows up
She wipes the cobwebs from her eyes
Then finds them on her fingers
She is surprised to find there were cobwebs on her eyes
All this time
